lord of the isles four-track �infras� ep, on the barcelona imprint lone romantic, demonstrates macdonald�s continued mastery of tone and timbre, mood and groove. the title track kicks off by intertwining stringed synthtopia with an acidic staccato grounded in a rich low-end pulse. �w5 alpha� continues the all-enveloping warmth of �infras� base layer with a deliciously disparate palate of sounds, driven by a celestial arpeggio and a dusty collage of breaks. the b-side sets the listener loose in a garden of synthetic vines that pierce the long-decay smothering of bass with �q-bit�, a track that maintains equal kinship with the bouncing exploration of a dance floor as with the cool tones and discrete resolutions of an henri rousseau painting. �three times eleven� reads as a tribute to macdonald�s early fascination with john carpenter and vangelis soundtracks, combining emotive synth arpeggios and cyborg vocal washes in a fly-by depiction of an eerie and beautiful sonic landscape.

after the acclaim of time travelers im made of stars lp last year, followed by two successful eps on his chronicles diary imprint, michele pinna brings his time traveler moniker back with remix report ii + chapter ix ep featuring powerful remixes by three key names in european and us techno. the ep opens with the veteran visionary dave clarke who delivers a complex industrial version of interstellar made of deeply distorted tones and punk influences. detroit techno militia take over with their reinterpretation of b-29 where a groovy and energetic atmosphere is set from the start, adding a vigorous touch to the track. brian sanhajis raw techno roots are showcased in alpha, with pulsing and dense beats yet precise cuts, turning the track into serious dancefloor material. time traveler is closing up the ep with hammering beats and distorted riffs and three menacing tracks in line with his dystopian sci-fi vision.

pomelo are back with another techno gem by lodig/dibek. the viennese duo delivers two modern techno acid tracks in unique style. on the flip side the cheap records duo erdem tunakan and alpha tracks surprise us with an old school piano techno rave remix.

originally a cassette release on wil-ru records in 2011 cn s -the expedition beyond- is a musical narrative that chronicles the astral travels of a star-craft and it s crew through the outer reaches of the galaxy. 10 tracks of cosmic acid funk, drifty nebulous synth-scapes and robo-centric electro (produced by stian gjevik around the same time as his classic -utrecht- release as eod).

following on from his intimate entry into the dj-kicks mix series, lone is putting out a vinyl only ep of all the unreleased tracks from it. the horizontal mix tapped into all of lones influences, from hip-hop to house, idm to techno. it also showcased some producers signed to his own magic wire label, and of course the back bone was built from some of the nottingham mans freshest new productions. they come after celebrated releases on werk discs, r&s and dekmantel, and include dance floor aligned eps and more rounded full lengths designed for close listening. here he sits in between the two across three thrilling cuts. opener �saturday night is a breezy bit of deep house with crisp boom-baps and swirling pads that lend it a dreamy, ethereal feel. spoken word snippets are stitched into the groove and the whole thing is as frictionless and feel good as house comes. next up, �arc is a little more direct, with scattered snares flapping over dry wooden kicks. its a punchy bit of house latest dj-kicks mix star kerri chandler would be proud, and comes overlaid with spring time flutes and luscious pads as a classically inclined bassline powers things along. last but not least is �alpha wheel 4 (ambient mix), a kaleidoscopic passage of suspensory sound scuffed up glassy surfaces trapping you in rays of refracted light from start to finish. all three tracks exhibit lones authentic, lived in and lo-fi aesthetic, and as a result slip perfectly into his ever more essential discography.

an-2 and samos have turned the clock back to finish off a couple of sessions theyd recorded together years back. maxim samos is our keen friend and sophisticated guitar player from minsk, belarus that we know for years. his first appearance on theomatic was back in 2008 with space-rock tune alpha storm, which received lots of positive feedback and found its way to the prins thomas live at robert johnson compilation. as well as guitars, maxim can play almost any string instrument and, on one of his erstwhile trips to istanbul, he dropped by a music store, picked up a saz and immediately set it alight, blowing away the entire staff. after scoring a big discount, he came out, clutching it in his hands. an-2 commented on samos playing on the saz during one of his first visits to minsk, and immediately suggested cutting a track together something that took 10 years, but the wait�s been worth it. what weve got is surreal halal-acid-folk-disco affair, perfect for whirling dervishes or dancing the dhikr. the storys continued on the b-side, where were treated to a tale of trips in a gti, before finishing with a nordic saga about cold fronts coming at us from behind the polar circle.

for its first release, rapid eye movement gives voice to vii circle who sign with �archetype� an inaugural powerful and exquisitely crafted ep for the imprint. the ep, to be issued in october 2017 in both vinyl and digital versions, features three original tracks as well as remixes composed by no less than dutch techno wizard keith carnal and belgian arising talent farrago.

emerging through storm-like waves of distortion, opener �alpha� sets the scene for this beguiling cassette release, with melodies rising out of � and then descending back into � the chaos. �3000 years� takes vocal samples as a starting point, before melting into layer upon layer of delay, after which �confounded� picks up the pace with its heavily distorted beats and the side then closes to the sound of a distant choir burning in acidic ambience in the shape of �fruitless clicking�. the nightmarish, malfunctioning machinery vibes continue onto the second side, with the more dance oor-friendly �strange conversations� and �the brink� bookended by the two-part ambient epic �pale blue dot�. dark, glitchy, and at times outright uncomfortable � perfectly suited to the cassette format.

new from stonedwave (founded by chip tronic), who has lately been active for both the kugkmusique and the oyabun labels comes a collection of powerful dark wonky techno tracks who have been created for freaking out on the dancefloor while still creating pictures in the listeners mind. the tunes have been selected and tested by dj wotta mess. the latter has been doing the warm up for dont radio show which is a regular internet event before jerome hill s london based events.

as shadows pass as the name suggests, reflects on a sound that has been around for years yet not prevalent in the present era. shadows move and alter over time but their essence remains the same, as it is with the direction of asp and the philosophy of the music it represents.

dark entries present -a tape-, a double lpof early work by helena hauff, a dj and record producer based in hamburg, germany. at university she studied fine art, physics, and systematic music science. she previously was a resident at hamburg s golden pudel club, where she hosted a night called birds and other instruments. as a selector she weaves energetically between electro, new wave, and ebm. her music, often recorded live in one take, has a raw intensity to it. she debuted with an ep on werkdiscs back in 2013 followed by records for lux_rec and bunker sublabel panzerkreuz as well as two collaborative eps for pan, produced under the name black sites with fellow pudel resident f#x. �a tape� is a compilation of helena�s earliest recordings from 2011 and 2014, originally released on limited cassette by handmade birds in 2015. clocking in at over 50 minutes, this collection spans hauff�s musical universe, from jacking acid-techno to krautish zone-outs and scuzzy feedback interludes. it�s tempting to consider it helena�s debut album, but she views these tracks as mostly forgotten sketches left on the cutting room floor. it a gripping collection of deep, sinister analog synth sequences, industrial dissonance, and heavy percussion. her equipment set up was a roland alpha juno 2, juno 60, tb-303, tr-707 and tr-808. both of the discs end with hauff stepping outside of the intentionally stiff, robotic rhythms, instead showing her skill at crafting less conventional electronic sounds. all songs have been mastered by james plotkin with vinyl eq and lacquer cut by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a checkered graphic and black lines, highlighted by yellow and green for maximum visual tension. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.
